for receiving fire calls, along with two vehicle radios

FLIPPIN, Ark.
- Summit's Volunteer Fire Department has received a grant from the
South Shore Foundation to purchase new communications equipment
for use in responding to emergency calls. The grant was approved
by South Shore Foundation trustees in late 1999, and the funds were
presented in January to purchase 10 hand-held radios and three mobile
radios and accessories for approximately $5,355.
Accepting the
grant for the Summit Volunteer Fire Department were Fire Chief Dwayne
McFarland, Fire Department Secretary Aimee Van Scoy and JohnVan
Scoy. The secretary said the new radios will allow the department
to have enough radios for all fire fighters. The department serves
about 2,000 persons residing in and around Summit in Marion County.
She said the department's funding from the city covers only utilities
and upkeep on equipment, with the department having to rely on fund-raisers
for other needs.
The South Shore
Foundation is the charitable foundation of the Northern Arkansas
Telephone Company at Flippin. Its governing board comprises 14 trustees
from the fields of education, business and government in Marion
