April 2006
Arkansas Department
of Parks and Tourism
In recognition
of the positive economic, social, and cultural impact of the
travel and tourism industry, people across the United States
will be celebrating See America Week May 13 - 21. Arkansas will
celebrate May 13 - 21 as See Arkansas
Week, and Monday, May 15,
is Arkansas Tourist Appreciation Day for the travelers who actually
make that impact happen.
In 2005, almost
22 million visitors traveled in Arkansas, spending an estimated
$4.6 billion, which generated nearly $260 million in state taxes
and $97 million in local taxes.
Across the
state, communities are planning to salute See America Week/National
Tourism Week in a variety of ways. The South Shore has one city
with activities planned:
- Harrison: The
Harrison Welcome Center will celebrate Tourist Appreciation Day
on Monday, May 15th. State, regional, and local officials will
be present to welcome tourists. A variety of foods, coffee, water
and sodas will be served beginning at 9 a.m. Local radio stations
will be on hand for remote broadcasts starting at 11 a.m. A proclamation
will be read by the Mayor declaring this day as “Arkansas
Tourist Appreciation Day.” A good time will be had by all
in attendance. For more information, contact Norma Sims, Harrison
Welcome Center manager, at (870) 741-3343.
