Students
Gather at Yellville
for Living History
Nearly
300 students and teachers from three area schools had
a “living history” lesson on a recent field
trip to the Marion County Heritage Society’s staging
of the Battle of Yellville, which occurred in 1863. South
Shore Foundation of Flippin assisted in providing the
educational materials with a $500 grant. Here, two groups
of students are shown hearing about Civil War era artillery
and the soldiers’ way of life in an encampment.
The re-enactment of the battle was open to the public
and attracted about 200 onlookers.

Yellville,
Ark. - Nearly 300 area students visited an authentic staging
of the Civil War era Battle of Yellville south of town at Camp
Adams. The students from Yellville, Jasper, and Marshall witnessed “living
history” as the two sides were encamped before the Battle
of Yellville was re-enacted on Saturday and Sunday. The three-day
event was presented by the Yellville Chamber of Commerce and
the Marion County Heritage Society with the help of about 50
area re-enactors. The Battle of Yellville actually took place
in the spring of 1863.
Sponsors had
five educational stations where visitors could learn about camp
life, community life around the Yellville area at the time of
the Civil War, the cavalry, artillery with cannon firings, and
an infantry drill. The heritage society’s president, Vickie
Roberts, talked with the students and answered any questions
they posed. Students and teachers also received 24-page booklets
entitled, “Marion County - The Divided 1861-1865.”
For the event,
South Shore Foundation of Flippin granted $500 toward the cost
of the booklets for the students and teachers attending, according
to the foundation’s chairman, Jodie Elizabeth Jeffrey.
