A scheduling conflict with a baseball tournament
prevented two of the selected Boys State delegates from
Lead Hill from taking part in the event.
The Girls State delegates were: Alissa Hopkins
from Lead Hill, Christene Walker and Samantha Pfister from
Omaha, Andrea Hardman and Kayla Risley from Bergman. The
Boys State delegates were Michael Hollon and Cory Lott,
both from Bergman. Two delegates chosen from Lead Hill,
who were unable to attend, were Billy Richardson and Derek
Rogers.
Both Girls State and Boys State are programs
of education about citizenship. The high school students
learn the duties, privileges, and responsibilities of American
citizenship by being assigned to mock political parties,
cities and counties, holding their own voter registrations,
campaigns, and elections for offices.
Delegate Michael Hollon, for example, was
elected State Senator from the mythical Arkansas county
of Carpenter and town of Fisher City. He was from the Nationalist
Party. Cory Lott’s assignment was to Sloan County
and Murphy City as a member of the Federalist Party.
Delegates who attend are chosen on the basis
of leadership, character, scholarship, cooperativeness,
community participation, and service, according to the
Girls State sponsors.
Each must have the approval of their school
principal, a committee of teachers, and the local American
Legion and Auxiliary sponsors.
