Among Arkansas Businesses in New State History Book

NATCO
is included in a new history book about Arkansas published July
1, 2002. Arkansas: Independent and Proud is written by C. Fred Williams,
a history professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
and is published by American Historical Press. The company history
of NATCO is in a chapter called Chronicles of Leadership.
The publisher
describes the Arkansas book as the story of the men and women who
moved Arkansas to statehood and beyond. More than 400 illustrations,
painting, drawings and period photographs were chosen by Williams
and picture researcher Lynn Ewbank, an archivist for the Arkansas
History Commission.
Starting with
the Paleo-Indians who resided at the headwaters of the White River
approximately 10,000 years ago, the text discusses early exploration,
territorial days, and the coming of statehood in 1836. Succeeding
chapters follow Arkansas through the eras of the Civil War and Reconstruction,
the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, between the World Wars, and
into the 21st Century. The later chapters are called The Land of
Opportunity (1945-54), Modern Arkansas (1854-82), and Contemporary
Arkansas up to the beginning of the 21st Century.
Closing the
book are the histories of many Arkansas businesses and organizations
that have contributed to Arkansas' growth and development. Some
of the businesses included are: American Freightways, Friday, Eldredge
& Clark, LLP, Maybelline, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and many others.
