Grant Given to Flippin Schools
February 2003
Dr. Robert Calvery, Flippin
school superintendent, presented good news to the Flippin Board
of Education at its recent meeting. Calvery informed board members
the school has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center
Grant.
Calvery said
the three-year grant is to develop after-school and summer programs
for preschool through 12th grade. The grant also will provide for
"academic assistance for those that need remediation due to
low test scores." The assistance will be available in all curricula.
It also will
provide for "cultural and physical activities and access to
learning any of the arts."
The grant, with options
to extend two more years, is $150,000 the first year, $120,000 the
second year and $105,000 the third year.
"It is
hard to get this grant," said Calvery, who attributed receiving
the grant to Petra Pershall, Media Center director and federal grants
coordinator, Dianna Cunningham, Consortium Program director; and
members of the community, "especially Joe Livingston."
The board hired Cunningham
as project coordinator, Calvery said.
