Trout Fishing Summary of Changes

  • The daily limit for trout has been reduced from six to five statewide.
  • The price of a nonresident trout permit has increased from $9 to $12.
  • No culling. Anglers may not release a rainbow trout after it has been placed on a stringer, within a fish basket, live well, ice chest or retained by any other device. By such activities, it is presumed that the angler intends to retain the trout and count it in the daily fish limit.
Unless the rainbow trout are being kept as part of the daily limit, trout exceeding 16 inches in length may be temporarily (not to exceed 30 minutes) retained in a live well only for purpose of measurement, weighing and photographing before being released. Any rainbow trout longer than 16 inches that is temporarily being kept is considered part of the daily limit until it is released.
  • On some trout waters, anglers may use only one rod or pole. These include White River and North Fork River.
  • Fishing Dry Run Creek (Norfork National Fish Hatchery outflow) is restricted to youths under 16 and mobility-impaired anglers. Mobility-impaired anglers may fish from the mobility-impaired access pier only.
  • One barbless treble hook within the White River seasonal brown trout catch-and-release area may be used.
