South
Shore Foundation Grants Funds for Girls & Boys State Delegates
June
2003
Delegates to
Girls State, Boys State, and their sponsors are receiving
additional financial support this year from the South Shore Foundation.
Up to $750 has been set
aside through a grant to assist traditional sponsors in sending
six delegates to Girls State, one
from each South Shore area high school, and six delegates to Boys
State on the same basis.
Girls State
and Boys State are programs held on an Arkansas college campus for
a week each summer. The delegates attending are high school juniors, who
will put into practice the
principles of democracy by operating mock governments, including
campaigning and elections.
The South Shore
Foundation decided earlier this year to donate funds to both Girls
State
and Boys State programs. Approached first by the American Legion
on behalf of Boys State, the
Foundation then offered to equally fund Girls State delegates.
Girls chosen
as delegates this year from South Shore Schools include Flippin:
Jennifer
Carleton and Lynlee Davis; Bergman: Marlena Ford and Mandy Wallace;
Omaha: Crystal Cheek,
Kristen Blevins, and Amber Christy.
Boys chosen
as delegates this year from South Shore Schools include Bruno-Pyatt:
Raymond Michael Harris; Flippin: Carl Wayne McBee; and Omaha: Joel
Travis Tindall and Tony
James Periman
