Senate Votes Down Attempt to Drill Arctic
April 2003

The Sierra Club Activist Resource

Arctic Plain

In a backdoor attempt to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, the Bush administration slipped into the pending federal budget bill $2.15 billion in expected revenues from leasing and development of the Arctic Refuge. But despite heavy lobbying by the administration and the oil industry, an amendment to remove the drilling revenues from the budget bill prevailed by a vote of 52-48 on March 19.
