Protect
the Arctic Wildlife Refuge - Please Call or Write Your Senators
Today
Arkansas Chapter Sierra Club
March
2003
The votes cast
by Arkansas' Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor will be key
to preventing destructive oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. Within the next few weeks, our Senators will be asked to
approve a budget bill that would open the Arctic Refuge to oil development.
Tying the fate of the reserve to a budget bill is a blatant attempt
to avoid public debate on this extremely controversial issue and
an open vote on destroying one of our greatest natural treasures.
As soon as possible,
use the information below and please write, email, call or fax Senator
Pryor and Lincoln and urge them to resist efforts by the oil companies
to sneak into the federal budget their plans to drill in the arctic
refuge.
Let them know
that Arctic drilling has nothing to do with balancing the budget
and it has proven to be a highly controversial issue that deserves
full debate as part of comprehensive energy legislation. Remind
them that serious questions remain as to the environmental impact
drilling would have on this pristine area and the wildlife that
depend on it.
The Arctic Refuge
is a national treasure, home to wolves, polar bears, caribou and
the staging ground for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds.
We believe this area should be preserved for future generations,
not plundered for six months of oil that won't arrive here for ten
years. Please, if possible, send us a copy of your correspondence
and any response you receive.
Thank You
